The temperate weather and mild winds of north-east Sicily make our newest Mediterranean base a great starting point for tours of the Sicilian coast, or voyages north around the remarkable, UNESCO-protected Aeolian Islands. A collection of dramatic islands and dormant volcanoes that rise theatrically from the sea, they aptly take their name from Aeolus, god of the winds, who tends to smile on this slice of Italy.

Set a course for Stromboli and marvel at the scale and lava-spewing force of Europe’s second-largest active volcano. It’s not all rugged cliffs and steaming craters though; the Aeolian Islands also have a softer, more beautiful side, with sandy beaches and lush greenery protected by natural harbours. Head to Vulcano for superb swimming, spectacular views and black rock formations; or discover the lush vegetation of unspoilt Salina, punctuated by three enormous peaks.
