Montenegro One-Week Itinerary

Be transported in time and immerse yourself in Dubrovnik's well preserved cultural and historical heritage! It's no surprise that this beautiful city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire Dubrovniks limestone streets, baroque architecture and the ancient city walls before setting sail towards Montenegro. Do your check-in at: ZELENIKA, TIVAT or KOTOR​. All foreign-flagged yachts should fly the Q flag on arrival in Montenegro and display the Montenegro courtesy flag on the starboard flag halyard. ​You MUST check-in before anchoring or proceeding to any other minor ports.​

Walk the City Walls

Get on the Cable Car

For the best view of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea, you should take the cable car which is 412 metres above the city a short way inland.

Once you have checked in, sail towards Herceg Novi, often referred to as 'City of the Sun' due to the large number of sunny days a year. This destination, which is more than 600 years old is also recognised for its several flights of stairs (100,001), plethora of mimosa trees, and summer festivals and events that include opera, classical music and movies. The combination of the idyllic mountainside Old Town and the promenade which stretches across several kilometres makes Herci Novi the perfect stop for exploring, swimming and sunbathing. Herceg Novi has a mild Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. In July and August, the town gets approximately 10 sunny hours per day, with sea temperatures between 22-26 degrees, offering enjoyable, pleasant swimming and snorkelling conditions.

Explore the Blue Cave

Blue Cave is one of the most famous, natural sites in Montenegro and is around 300 square metres. This remarkable cave is situated on the peninsula of Lustica, not far from Herceg Novi. Locals suggest visiting the cave before lunch to see the sun rays stream through the cave, showcasing the bright blue and turquoise waters.

Although Budva has been settled since the 5th century BC, you'll be hard-pressed finding much that isn't new and modern, outside of the Old Town. Budva is the place to go for lively atmosphere, with summer festivals and theatres, as well as stunning beaches and buzzing nightlife. The Budva Riviera offers an array of sandy, stone and pebbly beaches - some are sheltered by small bays, some protected by pine trees and some facing islets. Each day will bring a different beach to enjoy.

Head over to Sveti Nikola

Across from Budva is the largest sea island in Montenegro, Sveti Nikola - often referred to as the Hawaii near Budva. Enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters and relaxing in the pristine beaches.

The modern port town of Bar offers plenty of green areas and is home to many cultural events and festivals. It is also home to one of the oldest olive trees in the world at over 2000 years old as well as the regions largest lake, Skadar Lake, which is a great spot for birdwatchers. Many visitors head to Bar for the Stari Bar (Old Town), 5km up the hill, and its stunning scenery with cliffs surrounding the town and small farmers villages dotted below.

Go swimming at Murici

Murici is a small village situated on the banks of Lake Skadar, and has a great beach for swimming, relaxing and enjoying the stunning views.

Bigova is a small, secluded, charming fishing village situated on the Adriatic Coast, on the southwest side of the Bay of Kotor. Its clear calm waters make this destination an ideal stop for swimming, snorkelling, diving and many other water sports. Although the harbour offers good shelter, there are limited facilities on land, apart from a couple of restaurants and shops. A bonus for travellers is that the restaurants will always serve up the freshest fish caught from local fishermen. Chorba, fish soup is a national dish which is worth a try in Bigova.

Go snorkelling or swimming

The clear calm waters of Bigova make it the perfect place to go snorkelling, swimming, diving or fishing.

Tivat was once a navy base, however after a multimillion-dollar remodel of its marina and surroundings, it has now transformed to one the most luxurious yachting destinations in the Med. Despite being one of the smallest, it is the most developed Montenegrin munipalities, combining old and new traditions. Although renowned for being a sought after destination for the rich and famous, Tivat is the city of sports tourism with over 40 active sports clubs making it an attractive place for those who seek adventure such as hiking, mountain biking or extreme canyoning.

Visit Sveti Marko Island

Situated west from the Tivat peninsula Prevlaka is Sveti Marko Island, where you will find a stunning beach. Take the time to relax and go swimming in the blue waters.

After spending a night in Tivat, it is time to return to our base. Don’t forget to check out, in reverse order, as to when you sailed to Montenegro. Once it is completed, the yacht needs to proceed directly to Croatia. Then in Cavtat, do your check-in (42⁰ 34.979’N - 018⁰ 12.950’E). If that place is closed, the procedure needs to be done in Gruz harbour.(42⁰ 39.510’N - 018⁰ 05.130’E).
